About the Blue Ribbon Arson Committee

The Blue Ribbon Arson Committee was created by the Ohio FAIR Plan Underwriting Association in 1973, when arsons were hitting record highs across the country and in Ohio in response to a variety of socioeconomic and cultural factors. The Committee –comprised of firefighters and fire investigators, law enforcement, and insurance industry personnel – sought to join forces in the fight against arson.

The Committee distributes the Arson signs you have likely seen posted at fire scenes. These signs encourage the public to provide information and tips to investigators about suspicious fires. If a tip leads to the conviction of an individual(s) responsible for an arson, the entity leading the investigation can nominate the party who provided the tip for a reward of up to $5,000 through the Reward Program. The Reward Program has existed since 1978 and continues to help solve arsons to this day.

In addition to the Reward Program, the Committee also provides Anti-Arson Grants each year to two investigators who use the Reward Program. The Grant of up to $1,000 can be used to purchase equipment or education to assist investigators in their fight against arson. The Committee also sponsors an annual Arson Awareness Art Contest to promote awareness among middle and high school students in Ohio.
